OpenLaszlo

OpenLaszlo is an open source platform for creating zero-install web applications with the user-interface capabilities of desktop client software. OpenLaszlo is based on LZX, which is an object-oriented language utilizing XML and JavaScript. Rich-client applications written with OpenLaszlo run across browsers and across platforms.

Unlike many Ajax solutions, however, OpenLaszlo applications are portable across browsers. This is possible due to the OpenLaszlo compiler technology, which takes care of runtime details, allowing the developer to concentrate more on the application’s behavior/logic and appearance, truly making it a “write once, run everywhere” platform. OpenLaszlo supports a rich graphics model with many built-in and reusable components, as well as advanced WYSIWYG text and graphical editing tools.

e-Zest have developed applications using OpenLaszlo in both modes, i.e. SOLO (Standalone OpenLaszlo Output) or from the OpenLaszlo Server. SOLO based application deployment model is suitable for any HTTP based web server. OpenLaszlo Server deployment was considered for projects requiring support for additional data integration options, persistent connections and run-time media transcoding. Sever application stack is Java based with support for Java application servers.

Some of the key benefits of OpenLaszlo for RIA application development include

  • Developing standards-based rich Internet applications that support any Web browser with a single code base in XML and JavaScript
  • Deploying them from any HTTP Web server in SOLO mode, or from a J2EE application server or Java servlet container running the OpenLaszlo Server under Linux, UNIX, Windows or Mac OS X
  • Displaying them in any Web browser enabled with the Flash 6 Player or above, reaching 96% of all Web-enabled desktops

OpenLaszlo’s standards-based architecture delivers exceptional reliability and scalability, proven in deployments serving millions of users to date.
